The Art of Rainmaking

Rain-maker \ n (1775) 1: a person who produces or attempts to produce rain by artificial means 2 : a person (as a partner in a law firm) who brings in new business; also a person whose influence can initiate progress or ensure success.

The Native Americans who dwelled in the U.S. long ago would probably be amazed to know the term they used to denote one of the most esteemed members of their tribes is now an established entry in Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. Back then, the rainmaker was so named because he could make the heavens release much needed moisture to water the crops and make them grow, thereby assuring a sufficient supply of food and allowing the population to remain encamped on its land. The modern-day equivalent is revered for his or her ability to shake the trees for new clients and get them to sign on the dotted line, thereby "raining" revenue into the firm's coffers and ensuring its success, be it a commercial or non-profit enterprise.

While most of today's rainmakers are highly paid employees who reside in the top echelons of their organizations, in the fast-paced, internet-driven, managed care environment of the 21st century the fact is every person in a company needs to function as a rainmaker. Getting and keeping customers is the raison d'etre for any venture and every employee is expected to contribute to this effort in one way or another.

Are rainmakers born, not made? Find out the answer to this question in an informative, stimulating and entertaining one-day workshop to be held at the NYC home of Carole Hyatt, a noted lecturer, author and career consultant who has been making rain in various venues for well over three decades. By the end of the session you will leave with a virtual "tool kit" of rainmaking devices such as:

  • Understanding how many people you already know
  • Identifying and building profitable relationships
  • Tips for keeping long-term relationships vibrant
  • Ways to ask sure-fire relationship-building questions
  • Turning customer objections into objectives and getting to "yes"
  • The rule of three

If you want to become invaluable to your organization or enhance your own projects by developing persuasive pitches that will trigger a "client downpour" down the line, Carole invites you to join her for "The Art of Rainmaking". And don't forget to bring an umbrella….the forecast for the workshop that day is sure to call for "heavy rain"!
